A horse has tested positive for Equine Infectious Anaemia (Anémie infectieuse équine) following a Coggins test in dept. 83, Var.
The disease, spread by biting insects is often fatal in equines.
The equine that tested positive has now been euthanized. All equines in the immediate area have been quarantined, including the equines of Zavatta circus that are in the area. Any equine may be tested and subsequently euthanized, as AIE is an MRC (maladies réputées contagieuses).

Movement of horses in the area has been stopped and individuals are advised not to take their horses off their property.

Hopefully the regulations in place will ensure that this is an isolated incidence.

For more information on this outbreak and about the disease see the following links:

After 3 weeks in ERF’s care Mimi is progressing well and last night she had her first experience of saddle, bit and long reins. Mimi was allowed to experience the feeling of having a saddle on her back in the safety of the round pen before we put on the bridle and long reins. Allowing equines the freedom to buck and move around at liberty with their first saddle is an important learning lesson in the backing process.

Each equine ERF rehabilitates is treated as an individual and is worked on sympathetically, never being pushed beyond the progress speed they happy to go at.
