The donkeys are safe!

Today we travelled down to the holding yard in the Dordogne to see 3 donkeys, Nanette, Belle and Lena.
When we got there, we saw that the condition of Nanette’s feet (the oldest donkey) are quite dire. They have overgrown to the stage that they now turn outwards on all four feet. Unfortunately she will not be suitable to re-home for some time, if ever, but we could not leave her there and so decided to get her out first. We are taking advice from donkey rehabilitation experts who have now had photos of her feet emailed to them as to what her options are. We are hoping that with remedial farriery and veterinary care we can make her more comfortable and give her a chance in life.
We would like to thank everyone who has contacted us over these donkeys. We have had many offers of foster homes and we are now assessing the suitability of the permanent homes offered for Belle and Lena. We will be fund raising to help with Nanette’s care once our feet have touched the ground, but our Paypal donation line is open on our website
Today also saw the rescue of a kind hearted palomino mare who was also up at this yard awaiting her fate. Gina, her new mum, travelled down with us in the horsebox as she wanted to help one of these horses rather than conventionally buying one. After us dispatching with the mouche plats on her we loaded her and Nanette up and travelled back up to the Charente….a very long day, hence the late update on here!
Nanette is now safely tucked up for the night in her stable and we will return to the yard tomorrow to collect Lena and Belle.
We will update you all tomorrow but all 3 donkeys are safe!!
